Thus it has been possible to combine the traditional composi- tion of glasses with the more modern supramolecular chemistry of surfactants to produce templated glasses, which combine the benefits of bioactive glasses composition together with a mesostructure that offers many possibilities within the biomedical research field.
Finally, this section will introduce the pure silica- based ordered mesoporous materials, which were the inspiration for the pro- duction of templated glasses, and present many properties very interesting for biomedical technologies.
When the supramolecular chemistry of surfactants was incorporated into the bio- glasses field (Figure 1.11), a new generation of sol-gel glasses with tailored porosity at the nanometer scale was developed: the so-called templated glasses or ordered mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBGs) (Yan et al. 2004; Lopez-Noriega et al. 2006).
